Re-engineering the BJP

The BJP should take heed to what has been recommended in this essay (Commentary, "Needed: organic BJP," 15 June 2009). The time has arrived for a clear break from the thinking that has so far directed the party and its leadership. The party has to change with the times. India's population is young and wants to be engaged in productive activities. It is impatient for a better quality of life. Its political philosophy may not be well-formed and is subject to much influence by political parties. But it still has an underlying religious and cultural background, which will guide its political values.

The BJP has to realize that its future lies in attracting this youthful generation with a broad and values'-based vision of the country and the world. It has to provide a sense of clear direction to achieve this vision. It should certainly use the wisdom and experience of the older generation of leaders. But it cannot grow into a meaningful and strong alternative party ready to take the reins of government without infusing a lot of young blood in its cadre and leadership. The best way to accomplish this is the organic growth suggested in N.V.Subramanian's essay.
